What is a medical microscope? The answer to that question may seem rather short. It is simply a high power compound light microscope that is high enough grade for use in the medical and clinical laboratories for diagnostic use. A compound microscope is comprised of about four or five objectives of various powers that are mounted on a turret that can be rotated to place any of the objectives in the light path.
A medical application would almost always utilize the higher grade binocular or even the trinocular microscopes. The low cost monocular microscopes with only a single viewing eyepiece are reserved for cheap student microscope applications. The objectives on a medical grade microscope are typically Plan, which are the best, and much better than the cheap achromatic objectives found on a normal compound light microscope.
A medical microscopy application may also call for the addition of a phase contrast microscopy system for viewing the unstained biological specimens. It may also consist of a medical research microscope such as an epi fluorescence microscope that may be used in a pharmaceutical drug laboratory.
